The prevalent caricature of slavery promoted by those in power presupposes the racist construct that Africans brought to the Americas were less than human and deserving of their status. In fact, slave traders documented with wonder the heart-wrenching choice to take one’s own life rather than face the degradation of slavery. Thus began the brave resistance to slavery and battle for human rights embodied by Africans and their descendants with dignity, strength, spirit, leadership, and determination.
